Building a Shelter for the King

White to play and win

Play

To promote your pawn you must first silence the enemy checks. The winning method is to march your king toward a square where your own queen blocks every check at once.

Building a Shelter for the King

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

Queen and pawn versus queen is drawn far more often than it is won, but with the king close to the pawn and a knight or center pawn, the attacker can break through.

The problem. The defending queen delivers a stream of checks that keeps the attacking king running and the pawn frozen. Winning means ending that stream.

The shelter method. Advance the attacking king toward the pawn until you reach a square where interposing your own queen answers the check and threatens a trade. Forced to swap queens, the defender is left in a lost king and pawn ending.

In this drill you are winning but the margin is thin. Find the shelter square and the tempo checks that force the swap, and beware of stalemate as you corner the king.
