Queen Against Bishop and Knight

White to play and draw

Play

A queen usually dominates two minor pieces, but not when they screen their king together. Here the coordinated bishop and knight build a wall, and your task is simply to hold the balance.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

The theory

A queen is worth roughly two minor pieces, so queen versus bishop and knight is a genuine balance rather than a clear win for either side. When the minors defend their king together, the queen cannot force a breakthrough.

Why it holds. A bishop and a knight cover different squares, so as a pair they can screen the king from checks and guard each other. The queen finds no fork that wins a piece cleanly.

Danger for the queen. Overreach and the two minors can weave a net that traps the queen or delivers mate. Keep the queen mobile and the king out of the corner.

In this drill you hold the queen and must secure the draw. Look for checks and repetition, and never let the minor pieces coordinate against your king or your queen.
