The Second-Rank Defense

Hold the draw against perfect play

The theory

The defender in rook and bishop against rook has two proven methods. The second-rank defense keeps the rook shielding the king along the rank in front of it.

Shield with the rook. Positioned near the king, the rook covers the squares the attacker needs, breaking the mating coordination.

Patient and active. Answer threats with checks and quiet rook moves. Avoid passivity, and keep the king away from the bishop's corner.

In this drill the stronger side hunts for Philidor's position. Hold the second-rank barrier and draw.
