Breaking Through With the Rook Pawn

White to play and win

Play

Rook and pawn against bishop and pawn on the a-file, the pawns locked and the kings close. With rook pawns the extra exchange is enough to break through.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Breaking Through With the Rook Pawn

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

With rook pawns, the rook side wins where central pawns would only draw. The edge cramps the bishop and gives the extra exchange room to work.

Cramp the bishop. Tied to a rook pawn on the rim, the bishop has almost no useful squares. That immobility is the lever.

Second front decides. Rook and king attacking from a new direction overload a defender that is already stretched along the edge.

In this drill the opponent defends precisely. Keep it cramped, open a second front, and break through.
