Botvinnik's Method: Blocking the Check with the Queen

The defending king is far from the pawn, and that is when the attacker can win. Botvinnik found the method in a 1954 adjournment: answer a check by interposing the queen. Then the defender either takes and loses the pawn ending, or has to stop checking.
