The theory
One of the most practical rook-ending rules is that a single extra pawn, with everything on the same wing, is often just a draw.
No second front. Without pawns on the far side, the attacker cannot manufacture a distant passer to stretch the defense.
Active defense. Keep the rook busy and the king close, aiming for the standard holding formations.
