Connected Pawns the King Has Blockaded

White to play and draw

Play

Connected passers usually win, but not when the enemy king has already planted itself in front of them. Here the black king blockades your g- and h-pawns, and the extra pawn is only a draw.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

The theory

Connected passers are strong, but their whole power depends on advancing, and a king planted in front stops them cold.

The blockade. When the defending king reaches the squares ahead of the pawns, they can neither push nor be safely defended into promotion.

No lever. A lone rook cannot evict a well-placed blockading king, so the extra pawn never counts.

In this drill you play the stronger side and learn to recognize the drawn blockade before overpushing into a loss.
