Passed Pawns, and Still Only a Draw

White to play and draw

Play

You have the queen and a passed pawn, and it is still not enough. The enemy rook and pawn wall off the queen while your extra pawn cannot force the door.

Passed Pawns, and Still Only a Draw

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Adding pawns to queen versus rook does not guarantee a win. When the defender's rook and pawn form a fortress, an extra passed pawn on your side may not break it.

The standoff. The rook and pawn cover the queen's invasion squares. Your passer creates a threat, but with no entry for the king or queen the wall stands.

Play it safe. Recognize the fortress, keep your pieces coordinated, and avoid stalemate or a runaway enemy pawn. The draw is the honest result.

In this drill you hold the balance with more material on the board. Structure, not force, decides it.
