When the Knight Trick Fails

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

The companion to the drawn knight-pawn position shows the other verdict: the same material wins when the geometry favors the rook.

The method. Place the rook so it guards the promotion square. The pawn cannot move, and the defending king is left with nothing to do but wait.

The king march. Once the pawn is frozen, your king approaches and wins it, because a single defender cannot cover both the pawn and your entry squares.

In this drill the defender may try the knight underpromotion, but with no fork or check that hits your pieces, the swindle is empty and the win stands.
