Same Fortress, the Move Decides

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

Some fortresses live or die on a single tempo. This position is a draw for the side to move and a win for the other, a pure mutual zugzwang.

Use the move. Holding the tempo, you force the defender's rook or king to a square the fortress cannot afford, opening a path for the queen.

Then break in. Combine queen, king, and passed pawn to invade the shelter and convert. The whole win rests on not wasting the move.

This drill teaches how narrow the fortress boundary can be. Keep the defender in zugzwang and the win appears.
