Connected Passers Beat the Rook

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

A pair of connected passed pawns, properly escorted, is one of the few forces that outmatches a rook, and this is the position that proves it.

The advance. Move the pawns as a phalanx so each defends the square the other steps onto. The rook can attack one but cannot cover both.

The king's role. Your king shepherds the pawns and blocks the rook's checks, keeping the advance safe.

In this drill the rook defends perfectly, so keep the pawns linked and the king near; once they reach the sixth together, the rook has no defense.
