Sacrifice to Clear the Pawn's Path

White to play and win

Play

The enemy knight is the only thing standing between your rook pawn and promotion. The winning idea is a deflecting sacrifice: give up your knight to drag the defender away from the pawn's road.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

Sometimes a piece is worth less than a tempo. When a defending knight guards your pawn's road, sacrificing your own knight to deflect it can be the cleanest win.

Identify the guardian. Pin down exactly which squares the enemy knight covers on the promotion path. That tells you where a sacrifice must land.

Deflect and run. The sacrifice pulls the knight away or blocks it, and your pawn queens in the tempo that opens up. The whole idea rests on the race being winnable.

In this drill the defender will use its knight to shadow the pawn. Find the deflecting blow and count the race before you strike.
