Shouldering the Pawn Across

White to play and win

Play

The mid-line rule usually draws, but here your king already escorts the pawn and the enemy king is cut off. When the attacker's pieces are this active, the pawn goes through even short of the center.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Shouldering the Pawn Across

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

The mid-line rule is a guide, not a law. When the attacker's king already escorts the pawn and the defender is cut off, even a pawn short of the center can win.

Shouldering. Your king uses its body to shove the enemy king back and keep it off the pawn's path. That is shouldering, and it buys the tempi the pawn needs.

Cut off and advance. With the rook holding the cutting file and the king shouldering, the pawn marches. The defending king simply cannot arrive.

In this drill the defense fights to reach the blockade. Keep the enemy king cut off, shoulder it away, and promote.
