Frontal Defense and Checking Distance

Black to play and draw

Play

The enemy king has already reached the rank ahead of its pawn, so the pure Philidor rank is gone. You hold instead with the frontal defense: king opposing, rook checking from a safe distance.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Frontal Defense and Checking Distance

Waking the engine…

The theory

When the attacking king slips ahead of its pawn and the Philidor rank is lost, the defender turns to the frontal defense, built on opposition and checking distance.

Oppose and check. Keep your king in the pawn's path, facing the enemy king, and check from the flank whenever it tries to advance. The king cannot make progress while it is being checked.

Room to check. Side checks need distance. Give the rook several files of open board so the enemy king cannot approach it or block the file, or the defense collapses.

In this drill the attacker will maneuver to shake off the checks. Meet each try with opposition or a fresh check from range, and the half point holds.
