Short Side Draw with a Knight Pawn

Black to play and draw

Play

A knight pawn crowds the defender against the edge, yet the draw survives. With so little room, your resources are the short side, constant checks, and stalemate tricks near the corner.

Short Side Draw with a Knight Pawn

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Pawns near the edge shrink the board, and a cramped board cuts both ways. A knight pawn can be held to a draw with the right short-side technique.

Short side, tight defense. Keep the king on the narrow flank, in front of the pawn, where it cannot be pushed aside. The reduced space that seems to favor the attacker also limits his room to maneuver.

Stalemate and checks. Near the corner the defending king often runs out of legal moves. Combined with constant checks, these stalemate resources are the backbone of the draw.

In this drill the attacker will try to convert the extra pawn. Hug the short side, keep checking, and let the stalemate tricks save the game.
