The theory
Queen versus rook and pawn hinges on the pawn's file and rank. A knight pawn on the sixth, well supported, forms a fortress the queen cannot storm.
The lock. Pawn and rook screen the invasion squares and the king hides behind the pair. There is no fork and no zugzwang that gains ground.
The attacker's discipline. Once you see the wall is complete, stop probing for a win that is not there and avoid drifting into stalemate.
In this drill you hold the stronger side to a safe draw. Keep the queen active and let the fortress do the rest.
