White to play and draw

Play

Same knight pawn, a different rook placement, the same verdict. With the rook posted ahead of its king, the defense again holds the queen out.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

A Fortress with the Rook in Front

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Fortress draws in queen versus rook and pawn come in several shapes. Here the rook guards from in front of its king rather than beside it, and the wall still holds.

The structure. Rook ahead, pawn behind, king sheltered between them. The queen can check and circle but never wins material or breaks through.

Recognize before you press. Knowing this is a fortress keeps you from chasing a phantom win and stumbling into stalemate.

In this drill you guide the stronger side to a clean half-point against a defense that gives nothing away.
