Holding the Sixth-Rank Pawn

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Even with the attacker's pawn on the sixth and king advanced, the defender draws when the tempo and the king's placement are right.

The check. Before the attacking king finds shelter, checking from behind and the side keeps it from safely escorting the pawn forward.

The king in front. Guarding the queening square with your own king denies the pawn its final step, which is the backbone of the hold.

In this drill you defend, so combine the checks with a king that never leaves the pawn's path; a careless move lets the attacking king reach cover and win.
