White to play and win

Rook in Front of the Pawn on the Seventh

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

Rook in front of the pawn. Placing your rook ahead of its own passer usually blocks promotion, but when the pawn reaches the seventh the situation is winning if you can free the rook safely.

Free the rook. The method uses the king to protect the pawn or to chase the enemy rook away, so your own rook can leave the promotion square with a threat and clear the path to queen.

Mind the checks. The defender will throw checks to delay you. Meet them by interposing the rook or blocking with the king, keeping the pawn defended at every step.

In this drill the pawn is already on the seventh. Coordinate king and rook, sidestep the checks, and promote against perfect defense.
