The Umbrella: A Rook That Shields

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

In sharp rook endings the winning king often cannot advance because of endless checks. The umbrella is the device that lets it through.

The shield. Place your rook between the two kings, cutting the checking lines. It acts like an umbrella, and the checks that used to drive your king back now strike the rook instead.

March under cover. Sheltered by the umbrella, the king escorts the passed pawn toward promotion. Once the attacker runs out of safe checks, the extra material decides.

In this drill the defense will check from every angle. Keep the rook overhead, advance the king, and convert the extra pawns.
