King in Front of the Pawn

White to play and draw

Play

Your knight pawn is on g6 and your bishop supports it, but the enemy king sits right in front on g7 and even harasses the bishop. The blockade holds and the game is a draw.

King in Front of the Pawn

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

The strength of a bishop and pawn evaporates when the enemy king reaches the square directly in front of the pawn.

The blockade. A king on the blocking square stops the pawn cold and often ties down the bishop by attacking it.

Why you cannot break it. Driving the king away requires squares your pieces cannot both control, and pressing too hard invites stalemate.

In this drill you try to convert an extra pawn that the defending king has already neutralized. The takeaway is the blockade itself.
