Two Pawns That Cannot Break Through

White to play and draw

Play

You have two connected passed pawns against a lone bishop, yet the best you can get is a draw. The pawns are not advanced enough, and the bishop blockades on its own color.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Two Pawns That Cannot Break Through

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Two connected passed pawns are dangerous against a bishop, but only under the right conditions.

The blockade color. A bishop stops connected pawns by sitting in front of them on a square of its own color, where the pawns cannot evict it.

Advancement matters. Pawns still far from promotion give the defender time to bring the king and bishop into a holding formation.

In this drill you push two pawns that look strong but cannot break a correct blockade. The lesson is recognizing the draw and not overreaching.
