King on the Sixth: The Winning Formation

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

The single most useful rule in king and pawn endgames: if your king reaches the sixth rank in front of the pawn, you win regardless of the move, for every pawn except a rook pawn.

Why it works. From the sixth rank your king controls the key squares on the seventh. The defender cannot both face your king and guard the promotion path, so one of them collapses.

King leads, pawn follows. Use king moves to take the opposition and push the defender back. Advance the pawn only once it costs the enemy nothing, saving its moves as spare tempi.

In this drill the defender resists perfectly. Lead with the king every time and the pawn will queen.
