The Floating Square on Defense

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

The floating square works on defense too, telling the defender whether the king can corral connected passed pawns.

Stay in range. As long as your king sits inside the floating square of the connected pawns, it can stop them from promoting.

Keep counterplay. A passer of your own forces the enemy king to stay put, so it cannot break your blockade or chase you down.

In this drill the attacker plays flawlessly. Hold the square, keep your runner, and draw.
