Connected Passers Roll Through

White to play and win

Play

Two connected passed pawns on the kingside are a phalanx that defends itself as it advances. Here they overwhelm the lone enemy king while your own king mops up elsewhere.

No signup needed. The opponent never gives up, and every mistake gets explained.

Connected Passers Roll Through

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

Two connected passed pawns are one of the strongest weapons in the endgame. Marching in step, they guard each other and cannot both be stopped by a lone king.

Mutual defense. Keep the pawns abreast or on adjacent ranks so each controls squares in front of the other. A single king cannot attack one without letting the other advance safely.

The advance. When the king assaults the leading pawn, push its partner to a defended square and keep rolling. The pawns take turns leading until one forces promotion.

In this drill careless pushing lets the king pick off a pawn. Advance them together and the tablebase defender is helpless.
