Defending the Wing Pawn Endgame

Hold the draw against perfect play

Waking the engine…

The theory

Give the defender the move in the two-rook-pawns-plus-wing-pawn ending and the extra pawn can be defused. The draw lives in precise king travel.

Two threats to juggle. The attacker wants to promote the wing pawn or break the rook-pawn blockade. The defending king must answer both without ever fully committing to one.

The saving route. With a tempo in hand, intercept the wing pawn along a path that keeps you close enough to rush back and hold the blockade. It is a timing problem, not a material one.

In this drill the attacker will probe both wings. Take the correct king step each time and the position never falls apart.
