The Zigzag Queen Maneuver

Win against perfect defense

Waking the engine…

The theory

When both sides race a pawn, the side that queens first still has work to do: stop the enemy pawn. The zigzag is the standard queen-versus-pawn hunting method.

The pawn race. Escort your passer home, using your king to shoulder the opposing king away so it cannot lend a hand.

The zigzag. Against the surviving pawn, the queen alternates a check with a pin, driving the enemy king onto the queening square again and again. Each block frees a tempo for your king to approach in a stair-step, zigzag path.

In this drill the defender advances the instant your technique loosens. Keep the check-then-pin rhythm and walk your king in to collect the pawn.
