The theory
The frontal blockade directly in front of the pawn is the cleanest defense, but it is not the only one. A rook sitting far away on h8 holds this position too, and the reason is the mid-line.
Time is on the defense. With the pawn on c4 it needs four moves to reach c8. That is enough for the rook to take the fourth rank behind the pawn (1.c5 Rh4!) and then to step in front of it (3.c7 Rh8) while the king walks back to e7 and d7.
Distance is the point. From h4 or h8 the rook can neither be attacked by your king nor shut off by your rook. Meanwhile you cannot escort the pawn and hide from the checks at the same time.
In this drill you again hold the stronger side. Learn to feel when checking distance has neutralized your extra pawn.
