Queen vs Rook and Rook Pawn on the Sixth: The Drawn Break-in

The theory

The rook stands on b5, the one square its pawn protects. One protected square means Black can run out of safe moves. Watch how far that gets you.
The rook pawn is where the criterion needs a footnote.
The rule. With the rook pawn on its initial square (a7) the stronger side always WINS. With the pawn on the sixth rank (a6) the verdict depends on where the attacking king comes from: from the far side, as here, it is DRAWN, but if the king can march up the rook's file to a4 and a5 the same a6 pawn LOSES. So the draw is not the pawn's doing, it is the king's route.
Why the count alone is not enough here. The a6 pawn gives the rook only one protected square, b5, so White can build the zugzwang and march his king in. But coming from this side that is where his achievements stop: he can neither force the win of the rook nor smoke the black king out of the corner.
The practical lesson. Counting protected squares tells you whether zugzwang is available. It does not by itself tell you that the break-in leads anywhere, and with a rook pawn on the sixth and your king on the wrong side it does not.
In this drill you press with the queen from the far side and the honest result is a draw. Recognize it and stop before you drift into something worse.
