Doubled Knight Pawns vs Rook: The Second-Rank Defense

Passive defense on the back rank holds against a single knight pawn, but two doubled knight pawns break it: the spare pawn hands the attacker a free waiting move to force a rook trade on his own terms. Against them you need a different posture.

Both pieces on the second rank. The drawing setup keeps king and rook side by side on your second rank and refuses to be pushed onto the first, where the reserve pawn would decide. Here only Rb2 does it. From there the rook rakes the rank so the black rook cannot land on it and check your king down to the first, and the edge leaves the attacker no room to force a winning rook trade.

Switch to rear checks in time. Once the front pawn reaches your third rank, drop the rook far behind with Rb8 and check from the rear, exactly as in the Philidor draw. The same rear checks answer any attempt to peel off into a won king-and-pawn ending.

In this drill White defends while Black pushes the pawns with checks. Reply with Rb2, hold the second rank, and switch to checks from behind at the right moment to save the half point.
